As with all activities, writing fiction involves getting to grips with professional jargon. The following are some of the more common terms you may come across as you learn your craft and market your writing.

Write about what you care about…

Posted on Thursday, August 1, 2013 in Writing

“The golden rule of writing is to write what you care about. If you care about your topic, you’ll do your best writing, and then you stand the best chance of really touching a reader in some way.”

Jerry Spinelli

“If you tell me, it’s an essay. If you show me, it’s a story.”

I write like…

Posted on Sunday, December 23, 2012 in Literature, Writing

I tried this Analyze your writing thing and it turns out I write like Cory Doctorow when I blog and when I write SF.

I write like
Cory Doctorow

I Write Like by Mémoires, journal software. Analyze your writing!

Not that I’ve read anything by him yet – but as far as I can tell, that’s quite a compliment. I also tried it with some of my other writing and when it comes to my fantasy, apparently I write like Ursula LeGuin, a really big honor (if you can put any stock in this test, that is…).

I write like
Ursula K. Le Guin

I Write Like by Mémoires, journal software. Analyze your writing!

Unfortunately, when I tried to analyze my fan fiction the test seemed to have a breakdown and suggested I write like so many different authors, I began to realize that either that test isn’t all that great or I write really crazy fan fiction…

The 1990’s

Posted on Saturday, January 23, 2010 in Fandom, Other, Writing

So, now it’s official. The 1990’s are retreating even further into the past. From now on, I’m going to have to consider stories/tv series/movies etc from the 1990’s ‘historic’. It feels odd, I had barely grown used to the ‘noughties’ and now we’re in the tens? Anyway, X files, Roswell and all those ‘big’ 90’s series are now historic in the sense that you can hardly see them as contemporary anymore. Not like Heroes, FlashForward, Being Human etc. Scary, but I guess you just have to accept it and move on. Maybe it would be easier if the tv series, movies and music were just better.

I’ll have to do some translations again

Posted on Tuesday, October 6, 2009 in Fandom, Writing

That’s it. I will have to translate my Wallander fics into English. When I read the result of an online translation, I realized that this couldn’t go on. You have no idea how stupid it looks. I certainly hope no one thinks I write that badly in reality. Translating is such a bore. I’d been hoping to be able to wait a while longer, but since there’s a demand, I’ll just have to do it. Actually, it might be a good thing for another reason too. At least I try to tell myself that. If I get to work on something, I might be able to get back to writing again, and if so I just might be able to finish my novel, at long last. I hope so anyway.

The Only Two Writing Tips You’ll Ever Need

Posted on Saturday, September 19, 2009 in Writing

I just read this article, and found that I quite agreed with the writer. Sure, there are plenty of other tips that might be useful for some people, but those two are so basic, they deserve to be stated. What are they? Read the article and find out. 🙂

Feminist porn?

Posted on Saturday, July 25, 2009 in Fandom, Other, Writing

I just read an article about feminist porn. I must admit I was a little disappointed, when I realized that this, just like “ordinary” porn, was just about women. Naturally that’s fine for those who are into women, but not that much fun for me. I’d like to see some ‘gay’ porn for women. You can never get enough of cute guys together. If anyone would like to start making a couple of those movies, I’d be happy to write the script. That’s a promise. 😉

Letter to my 16-year-old self

Posted on Tuesday, May 5, 2009 in Writing

Thanks to Stephen Fry for this idea. 🙂

I hate to say this, C, but you’re going to wish you were fat again, just so you could be young. Sorry. Also, try to have a bit more fun, because that’s all you’re going to get. See if you can get D to dump his silly teenage girlfriend and become involved with you. That was probably your best chance to get a cute boyfriend of a reasonable age at that time. Work a little harder at getting a good education, because, frankly, you screwed up there, big time, despite the good grades. You should also begin to work on your writing a lot earlier. Imagine where you’d be today, if you’d been serious about it sooner.
