Quiz/meme

Posted on Saturday, March 28, 2015 in Other

I found this meme/quiz on a Swedish book blog and decided to do it too.

1. If you could choose to live in a tv series, which one would you want to live in?

I mainly watch cop series and that wouldn’t be all that much fun. Besides, most of them aren’t set in Sweden, but since this is just a fantasy anyway – maybe Endevour, Grantchester or Mr Selfridge. On the other hand, I think I’ll pick Star Trek (TNG), because that future looks a lot nicer than the past of those three series.

2. As a child, what did you want to do ‘when you grew up”?

Even though I loved my parents who were teachers and my favorite place was the library, other professions attracted me when I was very young. For a while I thought I wanted to be an astronaut (not very realistic) or an archaeologist (which as it turned out wasn’t realistic either)

3. What is your favorite smell/fragrance?

I love fragrances but in this case I’d say it depends on the context. Food, desserts, fruit and chocolate smell really great, but I also appreciate the smell of nature or a garden.

4. If you were a big rock, where would you like to lie?

Far into the woods.

5. You find out that the Earth will be destroyed in twelve hours. What would you do?

Hopefully, I’d have access to some amazing defence weapon and will be able to save us all. Really though, screaming and crying and hugging my family.

6. What would have been different in your life if you’d belonged to the opposite sex?

A lot would be the same as now, but I’d probably be physically stronger and more accepted and make more money.

7. What is your favorite tool?

Tool? I’m clumsy and impractical, so unfortunately, I don’t know.

8. What will you be doing in ten years time?

Trying to think positively, I think things will be roughly the same only better. Hopefully I’ll be living somewhere I’ll be happy and hopefully I’ll have children or at least one child. Sadly, I think I’ll still be single though.

9. What is your best song to dance to?

I don’t dance, but I love all kinds of music. At the blog where I found this quiz, it says Dancing Queen, so I guess I’ll say the same. It’s a great old song.

10. If you were really great at sewing, what would you make?

I’d make clothes for the whole family.

11. How would you handle winning about 100 000 000 Euros?

I’d invest in a really great place to live and in other ways secure our future. I’d insist that my sister stop working and then we’d find a good way to invest the rest of the money. I’d also set things up so I can donate money to causes I believe in.

12. This was a question about a new Swedish word for she/he, but since this isn’t relevant I’ll replace it with this:
How do you feel when you read a self-published book or a work-in-progress on Wattpad, when the writer doesn’t master basic grammar, has a very poor vocabulary etc. Do you still enjoy the story, if it’s based on a good idea? Or do you move on to another story?

I would stop reading and find a better story. A good idea counts for something, but you also need to be able to tell the story in a relatlvely decent way.

13. What is your best recipe and why?

I’m really bad at following recipes, but I’d have to say our vegan spreads, like hummus tahin.

14. How do you feel about meat consumtion/the meat industry? (No, I did not add this question myself!)

I really dislike it for a number of reasons. Because of all cruelty and ruthlessness towards the animals. Because of the pollution and because of the injustice towards the starving people in the third world.

15. Are you ‘addicted’ to anything?

My family (including the animals), books, chocolate, cold water, avocado, plants…

16. What kind of music triggers your nostalgia and why?

Hm. My nostalgia? Classical music, eighties music, nineties music…

17. What makes you really angry?

Rude people who go out of their way to pick a fight and those who try to silence people with their unfair master suppression techniques. And neighbours and bicyclists… 😉

18. Do you have any really good domestic advice?

No, I can’t say I do. But I think it’s important to use non-toxic products in the home, as well as everywhere else.

19. Is there any commercial you really like?

Since this refers to Swedish commercials, it may not tell you anything, but I’ll say it anyway: ICA:s (groceries), and Telia (telephone company)

20. Are you a lot like you were as a child?

Yes, pretty much, only thinner and sadder and a lot more disillusioned.

Lectures and haircut

Posted on Friday, March 27, 2015 in My life

Table Hill

Here’s an update about what I’ve been doing lately. First of all, what I haven’t been doing lately is writing, I’m afraid. 🙁 I’m stuck in the middle of my latest children’s book and so far I haven’t been able to get unstuck. I’m looking forward to getting some help from my sister but at the moment she’s too busy with work and her studies to be of any help.

So what I have been up to lately is mainly going to lectures. Usually, I try to go with either my mother or my sister, but so far, they haven’t had time or felt up to it so I’ve been going alone.

The first one was about this town and surrounding area during a time or rather times of unrest (ie war), back in the 17th, 18th and early 19th century. It was interesting, except for the fact that the lecturer (the head of the museum) kept referring to sources for genealogists. which my family and I are, but at the times the lecture referred to no one in our family lived around here, so I always feel a little bored when that comes up. Anyway, I’d already heard a little about this in an earlier lecture by the same man.

At the end of the lecture I went up to ask the man about something I’d heard of before. Some of you may remember that my sister and went on a guided tour of the cellars underneath the ‘Residence’ of the ‘governor’ (not sure of the exact translation of the Swedish term). Anyway, that’s about the oldest parts left of this town. Except for the rumoured baking ovens beneath the old prison, now converted into an exclusive apartment building. As it turned out, there are no ancient ovens left, but apparently there are some vaults or a vault anyway, where the ovens used to be. The man quite decently offered to show it or them to me, since he lives in the building. Unfortunately, I lost his card, but my sister works in the same building and knows him, even though her archive doesn’t have anything directly to do with the museum’s archives so she can get in touch with him. I hope we can both go and take a quick look at the vault. It may not sound very exciting, and the man himself didn’t seem to think so but again, we’re talking about some of the oldest parts of this town, so I’d still like to have a look. I’ll post about it later if I do get to go.

The second lecture was about the Swedish language and it was quite interesting, despite the fact that the woman who held it, a professor of Swedish at the University of Gothenburg, and the Dean (I think that’s the word) of the local college, was really proud of herself and her ancestry and never let a moment go by without pointing out what an illustrious ancestry she had or how brilliant she is to have been appointed to many prestigious councils and other exclusive academic groups. Apparently she didn’t like my questions so she tried to silence me by being condescending, while flattering an older man in the audience (entirely made up of retired people, except for a guy who seemed to be there as the driver of his grandfather or someone) for his questions that chimed in well with her narrative. Oh, well, like I said, it was interesting, but I didn’t like that woman.

Finally, I went to listen to someone give a talk about the ancient mythology of the Table ‘mountains’/hills around here. Some people are of the opinion that all our ancient mythology can be traced to them, or rather one of them in particular, one that is right nearby (see image above). The whole thing was entertaining, and since the subject refers to ancient times (more or less – in the Mediterranean, they’d refer to this time period as ‘Late Ancient Times or Early Mediaeval) anything might be true. However, this recently retired man, not sure about his actual qualifications, who used to be the head of another museum nearby, was so completely convinced of his own ideas, it was a little scary. He made little half-hearted jokes about how he ‘might’ be wrong about a few little things in his research, but his facial expression and tone hinted that he didn’t think so, at all. Despite that, it was all quite fun to listen to and made sense up to a point. Our Nordic mythology might have originated here, it’s a guess as good as any and like I said, some of his arguments made a bit of sense.

Other than these lectures, all I’ve done is have a much needed haircut. I might post a photo later on. Anyway, any readers I might have, will surely have tired of my ramblings long ago. 🙂

Doctor Who 10th anniversary: Catherine Tate’s Donna Noble’s best moments

Doctor Who 10th anniversary: Catherine Tate's Donna Noble's best moments

Doctor Who at 10: She was the Doctor’s gobby mate, and one of the funniest companions of New Who – take a look at Donna’s highlights in the Tardis.

Catherine Tate’s Donna Noble made such an impression in Christmas special The Runaway Bride that she returned in series 4 as a full-time companion. Gobby, funny and not interested in the Doctor in the way his two previous companions had been, she was a new kind of Tardis traveller – a mate. And a bloody good one at that.

Let’s take a look at her best bits.

Check them out here.

The Mosque Hill Fortune (The Sons of Masguard, Book One) by Vivienne Mathews

Posted on Tuesday, March 24, 2015 in Books, Children's books, Fantasy, Reviews

I just read this really great fantasy book, The Mosque Hill Fortune, by Vivienne Mathews on Wattpad.

A haunting mist sits on the harbor beneath Secora Tor….

Heroic Captain Marshall is called upon to save his country from the sinister mist and the even more sinister creatures it’s hiding. With the help of his faithful crew and a ragtag band of pirates he sets out to fight evil, forging an uneasy truce along the way.

Exciting swashbuckling adventure set in a fantasy world. Even though you sometimes forget about it, all the characters are animals. Since I love animals, adventure and fantasy, this was a very pleasant surprise. The only problem is that I’m really sensitive and tend to cry a lot when anyone gets hurt, especially an animal. Despite that, I would like to recommend this book to anyone who like me, likes animals and fantasy. The book is well-written, fascinating and filled with endearing characters that you can’t help but love.

Another nice surprise was that Book 2 in the series, Guardian’s Rise is also available for free.

You can find out more about the author and her books on her author webpage, on Wattpad and on Smashwords.

X-Files returns: Summer 2015 on Fox

During its heyday in the 1990s, The X-Files was one of the most consistently great shows on television. Its deep affection for supernatural conspiracy lore combined with its made-for-fan-fiction partnership between Fox Mulder and Dana Scully resulted in a show that you just couldn’t stop watching…
