Victoria Ratcliffe, a graduate student at the University of Sussex in England, set up an experiment to demonstrate that dogs do in fact pay attention to the meanings of words, and not just to the tone in which they are delivered. She’s discovered that dogs process that information in a different part of the brain from where they process emotional cues in speech.
