How to Help Animals Hit By Cars

You’ve passed by this gruesome scene a hundred times: a lifeless body of an animal lying on the side of the road after being hit by a car. You shake your head sadly as you drive by, thinking that the animal was surely killed in the collision.

But how do you know for sure that the raccoon, deer, cat, or dog on the side of the road isn’t just lying there—still alive and suffering—unable to move because of his or her injuries?

Read more here.

We found a cat like this. The only reason we knew she was alive was the way the headlights from our car reflected in her open eyes. My sister went outside to make sure and found the cat alive and only slightly injured, just dazed from the shock of the impact – most likely with the road surface (we think someone dumped her from a moving car).

We took her home with us and then to a vet. She wasn’t really injured; she’d just broken a tooth, and apparently she’d recently had kittens. We never found out what had happened to the kittens, but clearly the family who owned her didn’t want her anymore. Despite that, we did keep an eye on Missing Cat ads for several weeks. Not surprisingly, no one showed up to claim her. She remained with us for the rest of her life and became dad’s baby.

Thoughts about Care2

I’m getting a little tired of Care2 posting old articles (‘favorites’) time and again. It would be better if they collected all these old favorites in an Archive and anyone who would like to read older posts again, could just click the Archive link.

I also miss the Share function and, as I’ve mentioned before, the Photo Albums. It was a real shame that Care2 didn’t at least warn us beforehand, so we could have backed up our photos. With all kinds of other sites letting me down, I had grown used to at least being able to rely on Care2.

Care2 is great in many ways, but it’s not nearly as social as it used to be and I for one, miss that a lot. I felt at home there. Now I feel pretty lonely, despite knowing that there are others who keep fighting for the animals and the environment.

Not so friendly retweets

(I tried to post this on WordPress.com, but for some reason, the embedded tweets couldn’t be published there.)

I found this on a vegan community and thought I’d share it on Twitter, because it had all the hashtags, and I’m not that good at hashtags. It wasn’t long before I got a few retweets but they were not from vegan-friendly people. Not friendly at all. What do you think?

My tweet:

First retweet:

Note the spelling.

Next retweet:

There were also some people who favorited these retweets, obviously because they supported the mockery of my first tweet.

Do you guys get that kind of thing on Twitter too?

Finally…

We have finally been able to get some of our favorite vegan products (veef, chichi, scheese cheddar ‘cheese’). It’s been months since the last time. Now if only we could get our hands on some tempeh too… (Tofu, at least, is very easy to get).

Summer

No matter how much I hate living here, at least I can say that I’m enjoying the summer. The neighbours haven’t been giving us any trouble for quite a while and the rainy/cloudy weather has kept most of them indoors or possibly away travelling.

And then there’s the produce. At the moment we’re enjoying all the fresh vegetables that are available and there will be more soon. Not to mention the strawberries. I really love strawberries, even though I’m slightly sensitive to them. Fortunately, I hardly ever eat enough to actually get the rash. It’s not like when I was a child and the tiniest amount of strawberries could make me break out in an itchy scratchy rash all over. 🙁

We really should hurry up and fix the cottage up though, because before we know it, it will be autumn again and I’ll find myself stuck in this vile town for another year. Although I must say I dread the winters in that cottage. The roads are the worst aspect of living out there. I worry about not being able to go shopping. Hopefully, I’ll be able to stock up on all kinds of dry food and other stuff so I won’t have to go shopping once or twice a week like we do now.

Midsummer without tasty faux meat :(

Yesterday, my sister and I went to the big mall in the next town, trying to buy ‘veef’ and ‘chichi’ for Midsummer. Sadly, they were all out. Some other vegans had beaten us to it. At least we were able to get some ‘cheese’. So now we have to go to some other stores to shop for the rest of the food we need…. :/

We usually wear our big backpacks when we go shopping. This time, two rude young girls started bothering us. They were sort of boxing my backpack while we were waiting to get on the bus. Later, my sister fell backwards, when she lost her footing when the bus started, and one of those girls got her backpack in her face. She started laughing and after that, she kept staring at us, like we were totally ridiculous. I hate people like that.
