A couple of days ago my sister and I watched the first four episodes of Roswell. It was great. I’d forgotten just how good that series was. It really put a smile on my face. Once again I was reminded of how good the tv series were back in the 1990’s. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the series – and to the day (that I hope will come) when I can afford to begin buying my favorite tv series as DVD boxes.

Reflections on music and movies

Posted on Friday, October 29, 2010 in Fandom, Other

I’m a big fan of 80’s music. From what I can tell, without being an expert at music, the songs made in those days really were good, no matter how you define ‘good’. In any case, I’m not the only one who thinks so. I rather like 90’s music too, but not quite as much. The same goes for 7รถ’s music and older music as far back as to the 1950’s.

Lately, I’ve begun to realize that at least in my opinion, the 90’s was a time of great tv series and movies. That didn’t dawn on me until relatively recently, when I was considering the lack of good tv series these days. Up until 2004 or so, there were still a few good series coming along and movies too, but from then on they’ve become more and more scarce. Fortunately, there are still exceptions but I’m dreading a future when no good tv or film will be made. But to use an expression from the Oz books: no need to borrow trouble. Here we say ‘don’t grieve over a day you haven’t seen’. Who knows? The current penchant for ‘reality’ tv and game shows might vanish.

Dr Who

Posted on Saturday, May 22, 2010 in Fandom

For her birthday, my sister got a DVD box of Dr Who. It’s been fun rewatching a few of the episodes from season 1, but what we’re really looking forward right now is to watch the new episodes and see the new Doctor in action. That’s Ten. The latest season isn’t included, I’m afraid, but since we’d only seen season 1 before, a lot of it will be new.

What’s historic – really?

Posted on Tuesday, January 20, 2009 in Writing

Since I write historic stories, I began to wonder where you draw the line. What is a historic story? When it comes to fan fiction, I suppose it depends on in what era the fandom is set, but the question remains. What point in time, can be referred to as historic?

I guess there are different ways of looking at it. It probably depends on how old you are. An example: some years ago the tv series American Dreams, set in the 1960’s, was on here in Sweden. I tried to persuade my mother to watch it too. She said no. But, I insisted, it’s historic. No, it isn’t, she said.

In my own writing I’ve decided to treat a story set in the 1980’s as historic, whereas one set in the 1990’s isn’t. Some years from now, that might change, but at the moment, that’s my division. I have memories from the 1980’s, but I still say that’s historic. It’s so long ago.

Do you agree? What is your definition of a historic story (tv series, movie etc)?
