Writing teaches writing…

“What is the best way to write? Each of us has to discover her own way by writing. Writing teaches writing. No one can tell you your own secret.”

Successful writers…

Posted on Wednesday, August 21, 2013 in Other

“Successful writers are not the ones who write the best sentences. They are the ones who keep writing. They are the ones who discover what is most important and strangest and most pleasurable in themselves, and keep believing in the value of their work, despite the difficulties.”

Kindle Worlds: Do fan fiction writers want to make money?

Read more here.

These women make some interesting points. It’s nice to know that there are other fan fiction writers who are no longer in their teens and who stay with their fandoms over many years.

Write about what you care about…

Posted on Thursday, August 1, 2013 in Writing

“The golden rule of writing is to write what you care about. If you care about your topic, you’ll do your best writing, and then you stand the best chance of really touching a reader in some way.”

WordPress again

Posted on Saturday, July 6, 2013 in Other

In my last post, I mentioned my two new wordpress blogs. I might as well describe them in a bit more detail, since I intend to keep them closely connected to this blog.

One of them is mainly about veganism and animal rights but also animals, plants, gardening, nature human rights and more. I call that VeganLynx. The other contains quotes, images and links to articles about writing, books, fandom, history, languages and more. It’s called Crimson Corundum.

The difference between those two and this one (and my other homepages/blogs) is that on this one, I write original blog posts. On the two new ones I share things I find on the internet.

I write like…

Posted on Sunday, December 23, 2012 in Literature, Writing

I tried this Analyze your writing thing and it turns out I write like Cory Doctorow when I blog and when I write SF.

I write like
Cory Doctorow

I Write Like by Mémoires, journal software. Analyze your writing!

Not that I’ve read anything by him yet – but as far as I can tell, that’s quite a compliment. I also tried it with some of my other writing and when it comes to my fantasy, apparently I write like Ursula LeGuin, a really big honor (if you can put any stock in this test, that is…).

I write like
Ursula K. Le Guin

I Write Like by Mémoires, journal software. Analyze your writing!

Unfortunately, when I tried to analyze my fan fiction the test seemed to have a breakdown and suggested I write like so many different authors, I began to realize that either that test isn’t all that great or I write really crazy fan fiction…

Ratings

Posted on Wednesday, February 17, 2010 in Fandom, Other, Whining

A while back, I posted about ratings. I think I mentioned that I practically never use them for my Swedish stories/fics. We don’t require them (yet anyway), and I really don’t think they’re necessary. In fact, I was amazed when I found out about ratings/warnings, but since I want to be read, naturally I complied.

When I first started writing fan fiction everyone used the MPAA ratings so that’s what I did Then I found that FanFiction.net and FictionPress use the FictionRatings system and I switched to that instead. Having a separate system (quite apart from the legal aspect that I’m not going to go into) for fiction makes sense.

I also made up my own system that I use on my site (in addition to the FR system). It’s very simple, if not very detailed. Green means G and PG/K and K+, Yellow means PG-13/T and Red means R and NC-17 or M and MA respectively.

Yesterday I quite suddenly realized that there’s another system, one specifically for fan fiction. I was amazed. After all, I’ve been into fan fiction for about ten years (how time flies!) and I’d never heard of this before. While I haven’t had time to update my fan fiction site yet (too busy with RL) I will definitely include the Fan Rated Ratings System. I’ll still use the FR system though and still keep a page with the old MPAA ratings as a reference.

So, apparently, even after ten years, there’s something new to learn. Great. In fact the past months or so (which have brought me much personal pain and worry) have at least given me a couple of new fandom-related things to try and by now, use: Dreamwidth and Archive of Our Own. Maybe I should also mention the terrific Fan Wikis (though they aren’t completely new).

The writer’s course

Posted on Thursday, March 19, 2009 in Writing

Last night was the first time in our writing course. It was ok, quite fun, though not like the last one. I had worried a lot about the first exercise, but I shouldn’t have. (We were supposed to bring a printout from a book that had influenced us in some way. I’ve been reading since I was three and writing for almost that long, so practically everything I’ve read has influenced me.) That went ok too.

What wasn’t quite as much fun was the fact that out of a possible fifteen people (from the last course), only six had signed up and just four actually came. We don’t know what happened to the other two. Oh, well, I never expect much from this town.

Our efforts to start a writer’s group have failed. Only one person outside our family had shown any interest. No one has the time, or the inclination to join a writer’s group. :/
